The current Ikhtilaf in the work of Tabligh – A Statement of position by the scholars, muftis and imams of Bangalore city, Karnataka state, India
The global religious movement of Da’wah and Tabligh started by our exemplary predecessor Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Ilyas is currently going through an extremely regrettable situation, disarray and turmoil, and strange trials. Due to this, most of the eminent scholars and spiritual leaders around the world are expressing great sorrow and grief. It is the heartfelt desire of all of us and all the respected scholars and spiritual leaders of the world that this work, which has been going on for 80 years with complete unity, unity of word, unity of hearts and thoughts, obedience to consultation, and mutual honor, trust, affection and love in an enviable manner, should remain alive and vibrant until the Day of Judgment in the same way. And the faith and religion of the Muslim ummah should continue to be protected by its blessings.
But at this time, a discord and disagreement has spoiled its entire aspect. The main reason for this disagreement (as learned from the world-level elders in the first row of this work) is that until now, the objectionable things of corruption in it were from some general individuals of this group, on which warnings were given from time to time and to some extent they were also reformed. But now for some time, such things have started appearing from some responsible people of this group (especially Janab Maulana Muhammad Saad Sahib), so the matter has worsened and reached a worrying level. Therefore, the main things of Maulana Muhammad Saad Sahib Kandhlawi which have been declared as the real cause of the disarray of this work are briefly as follows:
(1) The first reason is that without the consultation and consensus of the elders who understand this work (who have benefited from the company of the previous three elders and spent most of their lives fulfilling the demands of the Markaz Nizamuddin in the work of Da’wah and Tabligh, and through whom this work reached, was introduced in the big countries and continents of the world, and mostly from these respected elders the old people of those countries and our country learned the style and method of this work) – running this blessed and vast work spread in about 200 countries of the world alone with one’s personal opinion and thoughts (Maulana Saad Sahib), and forcefully imposing it on those who do not agree.
(2) Unnecessarily deviating this work from its old, undisputed and agreed upon method (which the three elders Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Ilyas Sahib, Maulana Muhammad Yusuf Sahib and Hazrat Ji Maulana Inam Ahsan Sahib had put in the light of the Quran, Sunnah and the lives of the Companions, and on which the elders, scholars and spiritual leaders of the country had complete satisfaction and contentment) without consultation, and taking the support of extremely weak and baseless arguments by making the excuse of bringing the work to the method of the Companions.
(3) The third and important reason is the deviation from the creed and beliefs of the majority of scholars of the ummah and Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah in his statements, immoderation and exaggeration in explaining da’wah, deviant views and thoughts from the people of truth, wrong translations and distortions of verses and hadiths, disrespect in the status of the prophets (peace be upon them), critical comments on jurisprudence and jurists, belittling other branches of religion, etc. These are the main reasons for disagreement.
To address this, we, in the presence of Janab Maulana Muhammad Saad Sahib (may his glory increase) and the old and responsible friends from all over the world, at the gathering in Raiwind, completed the shura established by Hazrat Ji Maulana Inam ul Hasan Sahib (in which only two persons remain after everyone’s passing) as suggested by Haji Abdul Wahab Sahib (may his blessings continue) of the neighboring country who had benefited from the company of Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Ilyas Sahib. In this, from our country, along with Maulana Saad Sahib, Hazrat Maulana Ibrahim Dewla Sahib, Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Yaqub Sahib, Hazrat Maulana Ahmad Laat Sahib and Maulana Zubair Ahsan Sahib were added, and it was decided to run this work with a Shura system by changing the decision maker, on which everyone agreed except Maulana Muhammad Saad Sahib who clearly refused.
The old friends and scholars of the work who have benefited from the company of the previous three elders (Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Ibrahim Dewla Sahib, Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Yaqub Sahib, Hazrat Maulana Ahmad Laat Sahib, Maulana Ismail Godhra Sahib, Haji Farooq Ahmad Sahib, Dr. Khalid Siddiqui Sahib, Professor Sanaullah Sahib, etc.) tried to resolve this issue through private discussions and dialogues with the aforementioned (Maulana Saad Sahib) for a long time, but they failed in this and became disappointed with the reformation of the situation.
Finally, the senior Tabligh members present in Banglewali Masjid, Nizamuddin, New Delhi and around the world, out of fear of accountability before Allah, considered it an important duty to separate from the center and clarify their position and the reality of the matter in front of the entire ummah so that the ummah can be saved from misguidance. They clearly stated that we are not satisfied with the current situation of Markaz Nizamuddin and until there is a change in this situation and Maulana Saad Sahib abandons the system of self-opinion and accepts the shura system and corrects the aforementioned matters, we will remain separate from them and continue to strive and struggle to keep this blessed work on its correct path from our respective places, God willing. And they said the same thing to the whole world.
But the common and special people of the whole world were restless. They turned to Darul Uloom Deoband and the global spiritual leaders and eminent scholars for the reformation of this deteriorated situation and requested them to come forward to solve this issue. Especially, they asked questions about the deviant views and thoughts of Maulana Muhammad Saad Sahib from the people of truth and strongly demanded to express their clear and explicit position about them. So the principal, teachers and muftis of Darul Uloom Deoband, after taking a complete review of the entire situation, considering it their religious duty, issued their position and fatwa in clear and explicit words. In which they criticized Maulana Muhammad Saad Sahib Kandhlawi and others’ arbitrary interpretations of the Quran and Sunnah, wrong thoughts and views, and weak and unjustified arguments, and reproached them. And in a very positive manner, they supported the work of Da’wah and Tabligh and along with this, they also advised that the important responsible persons of the group who are moderate, serious-minded and have influence should strive to keep this blessed and fortunate work established on the path and method of the majority of the ummah and the previous Tabligh elders while respecting the Shariah and Sunnah. And before this, they had also indicated the shura system in their letter.
Many madrasas inside and outside India, such as Mazahir Uloom Saharanpur, Jamia Talimuddin Dabhel Gujarat, Tamil Nadu province, Kanpur and Meerut Uttar Pradesh province, Delhi, Punjab, Mewat Mumbai, Bangladesh, and South Africa, etc. (scholars and people of madrasas) endorsed and confirmed their fatwas, so that this work remains protected from deviant deviations. May Allah reward them with the best reward.
This was importantly necessary because most of the class associated with Jamaat Tabligh (who have not benefited from the previous elders and are not familiar with them) mostly quotes only the words of Maulana Saad Sahib, so there is a severe danger that the whole group may fall prey to this misguidance, then the religious scholars and muftis of the firm Shariah may declare this group as a deviant sect.
Therefore, we all scholars of Karnataka province (1) fully agree with the fatwa of Darul Uloom Deoband, (2) the decision of the World Shura, and (3) the consultation of our responsible friends and eminent scholars who have separated from Banglewali Masjid Hazrat Nizamuddin (all three things), and fully support the action of these gentlemen that they have taken the right step at the right time to save this religious and da’wah work from misguidance and for its reformation. God forbid, if this group established by our elders falls prey to misguidance, then we all will also have to be accountable in the court of Allah, the Lord of the worlds. Our silence at this time and not supporting the truth will be flattery. Therefore, we all scholars who have spent years, four months and chilla, and all the people of knowledge and madrasas who agree with the work of da’wah, while appreciating these decisions, fully support them and assure their complete cooperation. And along with this, we kindly request all the companions of the province that they too, agreeing with all three decisions of these scholars and elders, remain steadfast on the consultation of the World Shura and stay connected with the responsible persons of their province and continue to perform this work of Tabligh with sincerity, without discord, with peace and security. May Allah grant success, Amen.
