Mufti Taqi Usmani on Maulana Saad Ruju

On 23rd February 2025, an audio clip was spread by Maulana Saad’s fanatics claiming that Mufti Taqi Usmanim in a private conversation, told a person that Maulana Saad has made Ruju (public retraction).

The audio clip:

Audio Translation (of Mufti Taqi Usmani’s private conversation):

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu.

Apologies, but I am not willing to discuss this topic with you. Alhamdulillah, I am accountable to Allah Almighty for whatever I have said, and I will answer before Him, not before you.

Maulana (Saad) Sahib has made Ruju, and he also openly clarified his stance. This should not be ignored. Now, if you continue this discussion further, I kindly request to be excused from it. Please do not extend this debate any further, and for Allah’s sake, bring this matter to an end.

Due to Mufti Taqi Usmani’s private conversation, Saad fanatics claim all Fatwas are no longer valid

With this one sentence from Mufti Taqi’s private conversation, Maulana Saad fanatics were quick to claim that Maulana Saad is no longer upon error and all 60+ Fatwas are no longer valid.

This assumption is unfair since this was a private conversation and the context was unknown.

Mufti Isa Zahid Qasmi clarifies the context of Mufti Taqi Usmani’s private conversation

On 24 Feb 2025, Mufti Isa Zahid Qasmi clarified the context of Mufti Taqi Usmani’s private conversation. The conversation actually took place between a person (Yusuf Vapi) who kept on calling and messaging Mufti Taqi Usmani’s private number. In frustation, Mufti Taqi replied to him as above.

Mufti Isa Zahid Qasmi’s Full Explanation

[Audio Translation]

Bismillahirahmaniraheem. There is an audio clip of Sheikh-ul-Islam Mufti Taqi Usmani being widely shared, and some people are trying to create an impression that Mufti Taqi Usmani has accepted Saad Sahib’s Ruju, stating that he has repented and, therefore, the dispute should end. Some even go further to claim that Mufti Taqi Usmani has acknowledged the Ruju, whereas Mufti Abdul Qasim Nomani is not willing to accept it. This narrative is currently being spread on social media.

Since this audio is being shared extensively, the background is unclear—who Mufti Taqi Usmani was addressing, what the discussion was about, and what was actually happening. People are merely picking up a short clip and circulating it. Hence, I will clarify the context a little.

The reality is that there is an individual who is very active on social media, an extremely rude and ill-mannered person who troubles scholars by calling and messaging them. Such people cause great discord in the community. This particular person got hold of Mufti Taqi Usmani’s number and started sending him messages, demanding that he declare Saad Sahib a disbeliever and expel him from Islam, arguing that he has not truly repented or expressed public remorse. He also accused Saad Sahib of blasphemy against the Prophets.

This individual did not share all of Mufti Taqi Usmani’s conversation but only a selective portion of his audio clip. Mufti Taqi Usmani’s words were misunderstood because he was responding to this ill-mannered person, stating:
“I apologise, but I am not prepared to discuss this topic with you.”

The person was persistently sending messages, pressing for a declaration against Saad Sahib. Mufti Taqi Usmani further said:
“Whatever I have said, I am accountable to Allah for it, not to you.”

This response was directed at that same ignorant and disrespectful person. The Mufti was making it clear that he is answerable before Allah, not to this person.

Furthermore, Mufti Taqi Usmani stated that Maulana Saad Sahib had publicly repented and publicly made Ruju on his statements. He was emphasizing that people should not insist on labeling him a disbeliever(Kafir) when he has already made a public retraction. He also warned against escalating the debate, urging that the dispute should be resolved and not prolonged.

However, this rude individual took a private conversation and shared it publicly.

Now, regarding the issue of Maulana Saad Sahib’s Ruju—since many people are unaware of the full context, they assume that Mufti Taqi Usmani has completely accepted his Ruju. However, even Darul Uloom Deoband had recognized this specific Ruju. When Maulana Saad Sahib made statements that were deemed disrespectful towards Prophet Musa (peace be upon him), he later retracted them, and this Ruju was documented and even available on YouTube. He also sent a written statement to Darul Uloom Deoband, which was acknowledged by them.

You can refer to Darul Uloom Deoband’s official statement dated 31st January 2018, which clarifies:
“Regarding Maulana Saad’s Ruju, it can be considered satisfactory to a certain extent. However, the core ideological concerns about his interpretations remain unresolved. Even after multiple retractions, Maulana Saad has continued to make statements that demonstrate the same flawed reasoning and misapplication of religious texts.”

This is why not just Darul Uloom Deoband but also other scholars—including Mufti Taqi Usmani—are deeply concerned about Maulana Saad Sahib’s overall thought process.

Mufti Taqi Usmani even wrote an open letter to Maulana Saad Sahib, which scholars only do when a situation has escalated significantly

Mufti Isa Zahid Qasmi

Mufti Taqi Usmani even wrote an open letter to Maulana Saad Sahib, which scholars only do when a situation has escalated significantly. In the letter, he acknowledged the positive work of the Tablighi Jamaat but also warned against excessive exaggeration and misinterpretation of religious texts. He expressed concerns that such an approach could lead to a sectarian division within the Muslim community.

In conclusion:

  1. Mufti Taqi Usmani was responding to a specific individual’s messages, not issuing a general ruling.
  2. He acknowledged that Maulana Saad Sahib had made a public Ruju, which Darul Uloom Deoband had also noted.
  3. However, ongoing ideological concerns remain, as Maulana Saad continues to make questionable statements.
  4. The key issue is that true retraction should not only be verbal or written but should be followed by an end to problematic statements.

If Maulana Saad completely ceases making such controversial statements, then the dispute will naturally come to an end. This is the full background of the matter.

Summary

  • Mufti Taqi’s statement (about Maulana Saad’s Ruju) was a private conversation (not a public stance).
  • Mufti Taqi was answering in frustration to a caller who kept on calling and messaging his private number.
  • The private conversation was clipped and taken out of context.
  • It is incorrect to claim that one (famous) person’s private sentence makes all 60+ Fatwas against Maulana Saad invalid
